We do not have to stress enough that selecting the best TMT steel bars is one of the most crucial stages of any construction. It is the core of the building and therefore determines its strength, durability, safety, etc.
Fe 500 and Fe 500D are the most recommended TMT steel bar for civil constructions such as houses, offices, etc.
If you are looking for the difference between Fe 500 & Fe 500D TMT Steel bars, stay with us as we classify them for your better understanding.
But before we hop on to the question ‘what is the difference between Fe 500 & Fe 500 D?’, Let us look at what the grades Fe 500 and Fe 500 D mean?
What is Fe 500 TMT Steel Bar?
“Fe” is the symbol that indicates the presence of Iron in the TMT steel bar. Fe stands for Ferrum, the Latin word for the chemical element Iron. Figure 500 in Fe 500 TMT refers to the minimum yield strength of the TMT steel bar.
What is Fe 500D TMT Steel Bar?
Fe 500D is the grade of TMT steel bars with Iron and a “D,” which stands for Ductility or elongation property of the TMT steel bars. Fe 500D has a higher elongation capacity than any other TMT Steel bar grade.
What Is the Difference Between Fe 500 & Fe 500D Tmt Steel Bars?
Even though both Fe 500 and Fe 500D TMT Steel bars are made by the metallurgical process and contain Iron, they have some differences in their chemical and mechanical properties.
- Change in the chemical elements constituents
The main difference between Fe 500 and Fe 500 D is the change in their chemical properties. Fe 500 contains a higher amount of elements such as Carbon, Sulphur, phosphorus, etc.
A lower percentage of Carbon, Sulphur, and phosphorous makes Fe 500D more flexible and withstand stress in case of temperature fluctuations and adverse weather conditions. Fe 500D is recommended for areas prone to seismic conditions.
The higher percentage of these elements makes the Fe 500 steel bars comparatively brittle and might cause cracks in case of temperature shifts such as too hot or too cold. Fe 500 is less recommended for areas prone to seismic conditions.
- Change in Mechanical Properties
Both Fe 500 and Fe 500D has manufactured through thermomechanical treatment and have the same minimum yield strength, which is 500. But, they have a difference in Ultimate Tensile Stress, elongation percentage, etc.
Fe 500D TMT Steel bars have a higher elongation capacity and tensile stress compared to Fe 500 TMT Steel bars.
This means even though they both begin to deform at the same rate and return to their original shape after the applied stress is gone, the breaking point or ultimate tensile stress is higher for Fe 500 D than Fe 500. After this point, the deformation becomes irreversible or permanent.
